A BITSAA Picnic on 26th January 2007 at Tolani Maritime Institute, Induri This year’s annual picnic will be held on 26th January 07 at a very exotic location. It will be held in the lush green, peaceful and salubrious location of Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) at Induri. You are invited with your families and friends. About TMI It is an event you and your family will not want to miss. It will be a day long picnic featuring games, music, celebrities, networking and BITS nostalgia. The Tolani Maritime Institute is spread over 100 acres with modern facilities and infrastructure. It has collaboration with BITS, Pilani and awards BITS degree to its students. While the institute setting with fellow alumni will present a good opportunity to walk down the memory lane of BITS, the idyllic settings of TMI will give you and your family a perfect getaway from the hustle bustle and stressful city life to rejuvenate the spirits. The facilities at the venue include swimming pool (separate pool for kids), squash, badminton, table tennis, basketball, football, etc. These will be available for use to BITSians, families and friends on the picnic day. Introductory session on Golf by Chandra Bhople As a sequel to a successful networking session on 10th Dec, we are organizing an introductory golf session for beginners at Poona Club golf course. The session will be conducted by a BITSian (who else!) with strong profile of introducing till date a whole lot of BITSians to golf. Here is a brief profile of Chandra Bhople: Chandra Bhople Chandra is currently President of BITSAA Silicon Valley Chapter (SVC). BITSAA-SVC team is driving 3 new initiatives - a) Embryo for remote delivery of lectures by BITS Alumni, b) CEL - Focused on Entrepreneurship and c) Mentorship. Chandra was instrumental in starting BITSAA SVC quarterly golf events and encouraging beginner golfers. In his spare time, he gives free golf lessons to BITS alumni. He is currently Director - Business Development for Osellus - an ISV. He has 20 years of U.S. and international experience in sales, business development, and marketing for software, hardware and services companies in financial, telecommunications, government, manufacturing and education sectors. He has held executive and management positions at Formulasys, TechSpan (now Headstrong), Sun Microsystems, SysScan Asia, and Digital Equipment. Chandra earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and MMS with distinction from BITS Pilani. Ever wondered why you need to have a handicap to be to be a good golfer? He subsequently, worked in India till 1983, Singapore for a little over 3 years before moving to the Silicon Valley in January 1987. Jayan has over 20 years of extensive experience in designing and developing large, multi-processor computer systems, complex ASICs and SoCs in the field of networking, telecommunication and multimedia markets. During the last two decades, Jayan has founded four companies and successfully exited three. Most recently, he founded YuMe networks a company focused on "real-time online video Ad insertion". He recently closed a series A financing of approximately $7M from three premier venture capitalists, Khosla Ventures, Accel Partners and BV capital. Prior to this, Jayan co-founded Lara Networks in 1997, a world leader in Network Search Engines(NSE), which was acquired by Cypress Semiconductor in 2001 for approximately $300MM. Based on proprietary TCAM technology, NSE was not only agressively adopted by Cisco for incorporating in its world class routers and switches but also recognized it as the key IP that differentiated it from the pack. During the same period Jayan co-founded empowerTel Networks in 2000 to build carrier grade VoIP switches using proprietary media processors which was also based on the TCAM technology. The Media Processor, MXP,could seamlessly and in real time, convert 673(DS3) TDM voice channels into VoIP channels and vice versa. In 1991, Jayan co-founded Nimbus Technology a leading designer and manufacturer of Sparc Chipset. Nimbus was acquired by Alliance Semiconductor prior to going IPO. During his 4 years at Alliance, Jayan was responsible for 6 generations of PC Multimedia products. Jayan holds an MS in Computer Engineering from San Jose State University. He is the founding President of BITSAA-SVC and mentors graduating students at Duke University on Entrepreneurship.
